Wimbledon Jasmine Paolini injury

Wimbledon Drama: Paolini Retires Injured; Keys Advances to Quarters

In a dramatic turn of events at Wimbledon, French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini retired during her fourth-round match’s third set against Madison Keys, tied at 5-5. Paolini, unfortunately, suffered an injury to her left leg, forcing her to retire and reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal.

During the decisive moments of the final set at 5-2, Keys served but struggled with increasing discomfort. At 5-4, after Paolini managed to narrow the score, she required a medical timeout for treatment on her left leg. Despite initially returning to serve with her left thigh taped, she later experienced a more severe injury, double-faulting at a critical break point, visibly distressed till the end of the game.

Keys attempted to continue playing, but eventually, she informed the chair umpire on Court No. 1 about Paolini’s retirement, as Paolini was injured following a tough point at 15-15 in the final game.

Paolini had earlier won the first set 6-3 before clinching the second set 7-6 (6). She was just two points away from victory at 5-2 when the match reached a deuce.

“I’m really sorry for her. Ending the match like this is unfortunate,” Paolini expressed in her on-court interview. “What can I say? We played a really good match. It was incredibly tough. I’m somewhat happy but also sad for her. Winning like this isn’t easy.”

Paolini, making her debut in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, will strive to become the first Italian woman to reach the semifinals. Later, she will face number 2 seed Coco Gauff and 19th seed Emma Navarro on Centre Court.

Keys, aiming for her third consecutive appearance in the final eight at the All England Club, defeated Paula Badosa 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in a stop-start match affected by rain. This marks her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, adding to her 10th appearance in a grass-court Grand Slam tournament.
